Up in Smoke

Marjane's life was restricted through her parents and her strenuous government. She never had her own sense of direction as she takes pride in her race, she is always being told what to do and how to act. She adventured in her own mind to only find rebellion. She just wanted to fit in and found it in the worst spot. She climbed over a forbidden wall which she found obligated to do. "If I wanted to be friends with 14 year-olds, I had to do it." (Satrapi, 111).

Not only did her rebellion begin climbing a wall, but as well as the forbidden punk phase. On her parents way back from turkey they hid posters through customs. If they were to get caught they'd be punished, "you realize that if I find anything illegal, I'll.."(Satrapi 129). If Marjane see's her parents rebelling against the government, then how will she know it's wrong? In life, children learn from their parents actions as well as media and others.
Image result for loss of innocenceAfter all this it led to her first cigarette in which she stole from her uncle. The resemblance of the cigarette was a loss of innocence. She did this to prove she is ready to make her own decisions as a woman even if it was in the wrong way. After smoking this cigarette, she held her head differently, it made her feel like she had become an adult. "With this first cigarette, I kissed my childhood goodbye. Now I was grown-up." (satrapi 117).  What do you think? Do you think Marjane is doint these forbidden things because her family does them or is it her way to find herself?

Liar, Liar Government on Fire

In the graphic novel Persepolis,  by Marjane Satrapi, being raised as an Islamic female has many struggles  to be her own. The author make the conflicts come to life by showing the truth and lies in the monarchy at this time and well hidden they were as to when the government changes to democracy and all the lies are unhidden.

Marjane Satrapi uses clothing such as veils to cover up the dissembled government secrets. "Then came 1980: the year it became obligatory to wear the veil at school. We really didn't like the veil, especially since we didn't understand why we had to." (Satrapi, 3). The government was corrupt and trying to cover up what they believed the public did not deserve right to know. A cultural revolution was veiled and blended in just like the young women of the Islamic race. Not only was public eye blinded, but they were just as well as confused. "I really didn't know what to think about the veil, deep down I was very religious but as a family we were very modern and avant-garde." (Satrapi, 6). Democracy was now in power and the war had started, but to distract the public eye veils were once again strictly enforced. "Soon they're going to actually force us to wear the veil and you, you'll have to trade your car for a camel"(Satrapi, 73). War wasn't the only deed trying to be blanketed. Other injustices such as rape were as well covered within the veils, "And so to protect women from all the potential rapists, they decreed that wearing the veil was obligatory."(Satrapi 74). How could they blame women? HOW? It's just so unethical to punish women for unintentionally attracting me by having their hair down? That's SO insane!!!

The veil was not the only thing blinding the public. When the war had started bombs were dropped on Iran the news had to be spread somewhere. The television, radio and newspaper were the medias way of releasing news. Right before the news of the bombing was released, a distraction occurred. "suddenly, I heard the Iranian national anthem coming from the TV, our start spangled banner. It had been forbidden and replaced by the new governments Islamic Hymn"(Satrapi 83).They did this to distract the public from the lies or harsh truth. My question is why would they draw attention to the TV or radio right before they released the news? Were they supposed to be drawing them to the news of the bombing to distract them from something else, to have more lies?

Hidden lies and truth are perpetrated in the book Persepolis, by Marjane Satrapi, by blinding the public from the harsh reality. This not only happens in foreign country, but just as well as the U.S within politics, budgets, wars and laws. We all only see, what we are shown.

13 Reasons Why

“Hello, boys and girls. Hannah Baker here. Live and in stereo." (Page 39). Jay Asher brings alive the life of a dead girl in the book 13 Reasons why. Hannah Baker was all but a normal teenager who had her fair share of bullying, now it was her turn. She may not be alive but that doesn't mean she's not scared to make everyone else's life hell.
13 tapes of why Hannah Baker had died was finally released to each one of those reasons. Asher illustrated a way of hooking the readers in by leading in a HUGE story. But I have one big question. WHY!!!??? Why would Hannah want all these people to suffer when some of them actually didn't do anything. Take clay for example. He didn't do anything. He was nice to her. He liked her. “Overhearing gossip about Clay became a similar distraction. And like I said, I didn’t know him very well, but my ears perked up whenever I heard his name. I guess I wanted to hear something—anything—juicy.”(page 351). So why was he made out to be one of the mixed criminals on the suspect line?  I get she liked him but why what's he a reason she died? I NEED TO KNOW! WHY!?
